‘We Are The World’ was written by Michael Jackson and Lionel Richie and released to raise funds for the Ethiopian famine, which had reached its peak in the mid 1980s. Its sky-high sales and the tens of millions of dollars raised was championed as a huge success at the time, but what effect did the newly-founded charitable foundation have on the ongoing crisis?
The sad truth is that much of the money given in good faith to save many lives ended up being used to help Ethiopia’s dictator and fund nonsensical wars across the troubled country.
