UPDATE: The SUV that killed Anton Yelchin was being recalled because the gear shifters have confused drivers, causing the vehicles to roll away unexpectedly. Yelchin was driving a 2015 Jeep Grand Cherokee when it rolled down his driveway early Sunday. According to Los Angeles police, Fiat Chrysler, which makes Jeeps, said that it is investigating the situation. Most 2015 model year Grand Cherokees were part of a global recall to the tune of 1.1 million vehicles.

According to the U.S. National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, the Jeep Grand Cherokee was urged to be recall amid complaints that drivers had trouble telling if they had put the automatic transmissions in park. If they were not in park and a driver left the vehicle, it could roll away.

Anton Yelchin, the actor best known for his roles in J.J. Abramsβ€˜ Star Trek movies, was tragically killed early Sunday morning in a car crash.

The 27-year-old performer died, according to TMZ, after getting pinned by his own car. He was supposed to meet his friends at a rehearsal and they were alarmed when he didn’t show up or answered his phone. Upon arriving at his San Fernando Valley home, they found Yelchin β€œpinned between his car and a brick mailbox, which was attached to a security gate” with the engine still running and the car in neutral. TMZ reports that the driveway was on a fairly steep incline, but there has been no explanation as to why he got out of the car.

Yelchin got his start in the acting business at the age of nine in the independent film, A Man is Mostly Water. From Alpha Dog with Justin Timberlake to Charlie Bartlett to Terminator: Salvation β€” Yelchin was a standout performer capable of emoting and captivating an audience. His starring role in the Sundance romantic-drama, Like Crazy, earned him a lot of acclaim. Most moviegoing audiences know him primarily from his role as navigator Pavel Chekov in Star Trek.

A true artist, full of charisma and creativity, Yelchin’s next appearance will be as reprising in Justin Lin’s Star Trek Beyond. Posthumously, he has two other movies that have already been filmed before his death in the forms of Mark Palansky’s Rememory, which is about the β€œwidow of a wise professor who stumbles upon one of his inventions that’s able to record and play a person’s memory” and Cory Finley’s Thoroughbred, alongside Olivia Cooke and Anya Taylor-Joy. The latter film is about a story where β€œtwo teenage girls in suburban Connecticut rekindle their unlikely friendship after years of growing apart. In the process, they learn that neither person are what they seem to be, and that a murder might solve both of their problems.”

Celebrities, friends and fans have been taking to Twitter to pay their respects and lament their sadness over Anton Yeltsin’s passing.
