Keith Lamont Scott Murder Update
The officer who killed a disabled Charlotte man has been identified.
Authorities report that Brentley Vinson, a black officer, pulled the trigger and murdered Keith Lamont Scott as he waited for one of his seven children to get off the school bus.
As previously reported Scott’s daughter Lyric defended her father’s character and maintains that he did NOT have a weapon, just a book that he was reading.
Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department said the officer that was involved in the shooting has been identified as Officer Brentley Vinson.
As is standard procedure with any officer involved shooting, Officer Vinson has been placed on paid Administrative Leave.
Officer Vinson has been employed with the CMPD since July 21, 2014 and is currently assigned to the Metro Division.
The deceased subject has been identified as Keith Lamont Scott, 43. His family has been notified of his death.
A GoFundMe page has been set up for Scott’s family.
In addition to the officer in the shooting being identified, protests erupted last night from people adamant that Vinson used excessive force when he gunned down the disabled man. 12 officers were allegedly “injured.”
The Washington Post reports:
The demonstrations began peacefully, with some people chanting “black lives matter” and “hands up, don’t shoot.” News reports and posts on social media later showed police in riot gear firing tear gas and rubber bullets at the demonstrators and some people smashing out the windows of police cars.
Early Wednesday morning, protesters shut down traffic on Interstate 85. Some protesters opened up the backs of tractor trailers, took out boxes and set them on fire in the middle of the highway, WSOC reported. The station spoke to one truck driver who said people stole cargo from her trailer.
Police reportedly used flash grenades to break up the crowd and had cleared the highway by early morning.
Police said 12 officers were injured during the demonstrations, one of them hit in the face with a rock. At least 11 people were taken from the demonstrations and treated for non-life threatening injuries, hospital officials told WSOC.
