MERRY JANE

Like a rookie baseball player rocking an upper deck home run in his first professional at-bat, rapper Rob $tone wasted no time getting a big hit. “Chill Bill,” the first song that the 22-year-old San Diegan put out — initially on his SoundCloud page in 2014, then on his 2015 mixtape Straight Bummin’, and in 2016 as his debut single — is a certified double platinum smash. Employing the infectious whistle that Bernard Hermann composed for the 1968 film Twisted Nerve — and which Quentin Tarantino famously re-used in 2003’s Kill Bill Vol. 1 — the catchy track got firmly stuck in the collective consciousness. A remix featuring D.R.A.M., Denzel Curry, and Cousin Stizz followed on his 2016 mixtape I’m Almost Ready.

While preparing for the release of his debut album, juggling beef with rappers XXXTentacion and SKi Mask the Slump God, and touring as part of the Made in America Festival, $tone and his pops dropped by the GGN studio, where he and Snoop smoked out and talked about the making of “Chill Bill,” creating a new West Coast anthem, growing up on Snoop’s music, the worst job he’s ever had (it’s very San Diego), and much more. Check it out.
