In the days following the Orlando club massacre that claimed 49 lives and wounded 53 more, Frank Ocean took to his Tumblr page to mourn the loss of those souls and ruminate on the first time he had encountered such focused hate and bigotry. He recalled a time when his father pulled him out of a diner:
“I was six years old when I heard my dad call our transgender waitress a faggot as he dragged me out a neighborhood diner saying we wouldn’t be served because she was dirty. That was the last afternoon I saw my father and the first time I heard that word, I think, although it wouldn’t shock me if it wasn’t.”
Now, according to TMZ, Ocean’s father, Calvin Cooksey, is claiming that his son’s painful reminiscences are both untrue and have somehow cost him an ungodly chunk of potential income, filing a suit for $14.5 million in damages against his son. It’s still unclear exactly what Cooksey does outside of suing famous people for outing him as a scumbag– in 2014, he sued Russell Simmons for $142 million after Global Grind published a piece that he claims made him out to be a “deadbeat dad” — but if this actually goes to court, we could very well find out.
At the moment, there’s no report of a response from Ocean. But maybe he’ll just make a record about instead. Oh wait, he did that already. Twice. Pick up a copy of Blond(e) on iTunes.
