As we inch closer and closer to the new year, First Look Friday has been imbued by some talented singers, songwriters, MCs and performers from different parts of the globe. For this week’s subject, Louis Mattrs, we chat it up with the Brighton born-and-raised maestro about a myriad of things and learn something new in the process. If you’ve been hiding in a dark, wi-fi-less cave, Louis has punched through the public consciousness with an array of tracks that have him listed amongst the likes of G-Eazy, PARTYNEXTDOOR and Chase & Status. Following the release of his five-track EP titled, Slow Waves, Louis Mattrs has begun to prove his status as a solid force to be reckoned with.
Much like when he dropped the ‘E’ from his name, Louis Mattrs is all for making sure that audiophiles pay attention to his moves. Developing his talent from writing for the ladies to crafting global hits for the masses, Louis Mattrs absorbs his influences and offers them back to the public like a cresting wave on a beautiful beach. Whether or not one chooses to believe it, this young, budding phenom is no stranger to the music world. It is one of the reasons why we’re excited to write about him for the Okayplayer audience to become familiar with. Without further ado, we ask for you to check out Louis Mattrs, the man known for being Zane Lowe‘s “next hype” and having a fan in Annie Mac, as he sits down with us to premiere his newest, Two Inch Punch-produced single, “Bow Down,” share one thing no one outside of friends and family knows about him and why the internet is such an amazing thing.

Okayplayer: For those who have a passion for music, they honed their skills and practiced their craft. Who are your most cherished influences in music and why?
Louis Mattrs: I would say Pharrell [Williams] and Timbaland are massive influences in terms of production style. I grew up listening to their work and I loved it.
OKP: Your song, “Bow Down” is extremely dope and has heightened anticipation for new work from you by music snobs who have a heavy presence in the industry. Can you talk about how life was for you while developing as an artist? How did you react to your first bits of press?
LM: Life never really felt like it changed to me. I was still the same old me, but I could now sing and make music a little better. At least, I hope so anyway. My first press interview went really well as I was simply talking about what I loved.
OKP: What have been the most definitive obstacles that you’ve overcome in your career thus far?
LM: [I’d probably say] getting out of bed in the morning is the biggest struggle ever. I work into the early hours as I am normally more creative at that time, so I always sleep [in] late, too.
OKP: What are some things that you’ve learned about yourself that comes out in your music?
