The terrorist Dylann Roof, a white nationalist that brutally murdered nine black churchgoers in South Carolina will not call any witnesses or bring in any evidence during his sentencing trial. Roof faces either life imprisonment or the death penalty. The white supremacist Roof has waived the right to a lawyer and will be acting as his own legal counsel. When the trial resumes on January 3rd Roof will make an opening statement though remarked to Judge Richard Gergel of U.S. District Court, “At this point I’m not intending to offer any evidence at all or call any witnesses.” Roof also says he plans to make a closing statement. Roof’s attack took place on June 17th, 2015 at the historically black Emanuel African Methodist Episcopal Church in Charleston, South Carolina. Roof entered the church and killed nine churchgoers at bible study with the intent of starting a race war. The massacre took the life of a senior pastor and state senator Clementa C. Pinckney. In addition to the nine people killed, Roof injured another. The 22-year-old white nationalist was found guilty on thirty three federal charges which include:
• Nine counts of violating the Hate Crime Act resulting in death
• Nine counts of use of a firearm to commit murder during and in relation to a crime of violence
• Nine counts of obstruction of exercise of religion resulting in death
• Three counts of violating the Hate Crime Act involving an attempt to kill
• Three counts of obstruction of exercise of religion involving an attempt to kill and use of a dangerous weapon
