There is a deep world behind ghostwriting, and in a new interview with Power 106, Consequence gives a peek into it.
Along with working with A Tribe Called Quest, Cons has been known as a collaborator with Kanye West and as a ghostwriter – an artist who is paid to write for other artists without receiving credit.
He sidesteps radio host J Cruz’s question of if he wrote Kanye’s “Good Life,” but he admits that he helped write the chorus to “Encore,” the standout from Jay Z’s The Black Album.
“One record in particular I was happy about to be a part of was Jay Z’s ‘Encore,’” he said. “When me and Kanye kinda was on the phone and we actually kinda came up with the chorus back and forth.”
He also adds that frequent Kanye collaborator GLC is the voice chanting “Hova!” on the beat.
Aside from that chorus, Consequence is mum on songs he has ghostwritten for. The reasoning he gives is how any secret collaborator should likely think: put the music first, and put aside the need for recognition.
“For me, it’s about the work. I want to be a part of special records. I don’t need to raise my social equity by just going into my illuminati staircase and pulling out names,” he said. “…It’s a little venomous to out somebody. Especially if you were paid and compensated, and you got your credit and your publishing. That’s it, it’s a closed deal.”
“There’s a level of professionalism I try to keep,” he said.
