MERRY JANE
Los Angeles’ rap game is in the middle of a renaissance. Carrying on the tradition of Southern California’s G-Funk origins and banging bass lines, the latest round of Southland rappers and singers are making a name for themselves both locally and on a national scale. Hailing from Compton, special guest AD is climbing to the top of the heap. Thanks to a handful of mixtapes released over the past few years, AD’s star has steadily grown, with recent collaborations with area-heavyweights YG, Joe Moses and The Game propelling him to even higher reaches. Now, with a new album, Last of the ‘80s, out now, AD is ready for more L.A. rap unity, club night turn-ups, and world tours.
On the latest episode of GGN, AD joined Uncle Snoop in the studio to break down the shifting politics of Southland gang culture in the rap scene, where it’s now common to see Bloods and Crips like YG and AD collaborate on songs, music videos, and even club nights. Outside the rap game, Snoop challenged AD to a round of bowling, picked his brain about producers, and of course, with AD still on the come-up, Snoop doled out some words of wisdom about growth and evolution in the music industry.
So grab your popcorn, fire up your favorite strain, and grab a seat alongside the Doggfather for a conversation with one of the Southland’s rising stars. And for more AD, pick up his newest project, Last of the ’80s, featuring collaborations with the likes of Wiz Khalifa, OT Genasis, G Perico, and more.
