Brooklyn’s own Bobby Shmurda has had an up-and-down ride in hip-hop. The architect of “Hot N***a” and “Bobby B***h” was riding the wave of viral infamy, but was unable to collect $200 and pass go after being arrested on conspiracy charges put forth by the NYPD. The 22-year-old rapper pleaded guilty earlier this year to avoid going to trial on counts carrying penalties that would have put him behind bars for decades. He attempted to withdraw the plea on Wednesday, but a Manhattan judge denied the request.
Born Ackquille Pollard, the hip-hop star appeared alone at the court hearing, separate from his partner-in-rhyme and co-defendants, Chad “Rowdy Rebel” Marshall and Nicholas McCoy. Judge Abraham Clott gave Bobby seven years in prison, but with time served and good behavior, Shmurda could be out and back on the streets by 2021. In accepting the plea deal, Bobby waived his right to appeal. “I was forced to take this sentence, I did not want to take this sentence,” Shmurda told the court. “I was forced by my attorney to take this plea,” according to Billboard.
Shmurda’s “global plea deal” did reduce his, Rowdy and McCoy’s maximum possible sentences from 15 years. Alex Spiro, Bobby Shmurda’s legal counsel, asked for delay on official sentencing, citing that his client had not been interviewed because the jail was on lockdown during his scheduled date. The judge denied the adjournment request. The creator of the “Shmoney Dance” might still have a future if he puts his energy in staying away from trouble.
