Yaya Bey, daughter of the legendary Grand Daddy I.U., has built up quite the reputation as a visual artist, a poet and musician. The New York born-and-raised artist has compiled all her energies into her debut EP, The Many Alter-Egos of Trill’etta Brown. As a dynamic creative full of #BlackGirlMagic, Yaya Bey’s effort is a “look at all the women she can be and have been all at once sometimes,” according to a quote she provided. For today, we’re ecstatic to premiere the song “Get $ Trixie,” which is from The Many Alter-Egos of Trill’etta Brown.

In addition to the music, Yaya Bey’s project is both an EP and a book. The book is a Biomythography inspired by Audre Lorde, which will also include a digital collage. Fueled by old-and-new soul and hip-hop influences, Trill’etta Brown exists to encourage and excite black girls and push the fullness that is the black femme existence. “Get $ Trixie is an ode to self. I was in New York and really struggling,” Yaya told Okayplayer exclusively. “There’s so many images in this world that are saying, ‘Hey, you’re not good enough,’ or ‘This is the wave you need to be on right now.’ I had to center myself.”

Going on to let us know that she was in a long distance relationship, Yaya was involved with someone who lived in Washington, D.C. While they were separated by state lines and distances, it was a voice memo of him playing guitar that inspired the song. “At first I thought this was a love song and I guess in ways it still is. He was going through similar things and the words were for him, you know, like get up, you are enough, your vision is valid, but the words applied to me too.” “Get $ Trixie” eventually is a song much needed by people of color, as a self-love, self-care song that anyone going through trauma or a rough time can gravitate towards.

Listen to “Get $ Trixie” below, and be sure to get your coins in order to cop The Many Alter-Egos of Trill’etta Brown when it drops tomorrow, October 14th.
