An open casting call for the Netflix show “The Get Down” has been making its rounds on the Internet, but supervising producer Nelson George said the call is a misunderstanding.

“There is no open call going on for @TheGetDown,” he tweeted. “An old post is circulating on the website. There’s no new casting happening at this time.”

The tweet will come as a letdown for fans of the show. “The Get Down” hit Netflix this summer as a series set in the Bronx during the late 1970s, when hip-hop was born. The fictionalized tale tells the story of a young poet, an aspiring singer, and a graffiti writer-turned-DJ chasing their dreams to become a part of the bubbling new culture that would change so many lives. The show stars Justice Smith, Shameik Moore (known for his starring role in Dope), and Herizen F. Guardiola, with actors also portraying Grandmaster Flash and DJ Kool Herc.

The show has received mixed reviews – some loved the magical realism the show used to capture the feeling of hip-hop growing from the ground up, and others felt the show took too much creative license toward events that happened in real life. A recent story by Variety reports a “tepid reception” in its first month of release, compared to other Netflix originals.

George, a respected hip-hop journalist and critic who was around to experience the booming of the culture in real time, is the supervising producer of the show. Producers are hoping for a second season, but Netflix hasn’t renewed the series yet. Only time will tell.
