The Magnificent Seven director, Antoine Fuqua, is in negotiations with Universal to helm a re-imagining of Scarface. This would be the third iteration of the crime classic that Universal made all the way back in 1932 with director Howard Hawks and Paul Muni and again in 1983 with director Brian De Palma and Al Pacino.
The as-yet-to-be produced new version will borrow the immigrant rags-to-riches story but present it in contemporary Los Angeles, California. Jonathan Herman wrote the most recent draft, as Scarface will be a Bluegrass Films and Global Produce production. Fuqua, who is no stranger to crime films (Training Day, The Equalizer), seems like the right choice for the material.
According to Deadline, the project has been a priority of sorts for Universal.
In other news, Fuqua’s other movie, The Magnificent Seven, will be in theaters on September 23. Starring Denzel Washington, Chris Pratt, Ethan Hawke, Vincent D’Onofrio, Haley Bennett and Peter Sarsgaard, the film is a co-production between MGM and Sony Pictures.
