September cannot come fast enough (even though it looks like it’s already around the corner) as Netflix is showcasing another incredibly exciting look at Luke Cage. Marvel already had us hooked after debuting its “bulletproof black man” trailer during this year’s San Diego Comic Con, yet now, the clip below adds some more meat to the show’s bones in terms of tone, tenacity and plot.
For those hiding under a rock, Luke Cage (Mike Colter) was the standout star in Marvel’s Jessica Jones series. His brand of get-it-done, gritty, New York noir has built extra hype for the Avengers B-team squad, The Defenders, which will have its own mini-series coming up soon.
This new look at Luke Cage finds Harlem taking center stage. It has changed quite dramatically since the Incredible Hulk took on The Abomination some years ago. In the trailer below, you get a taste of the new threats looming in the shadows upon Harlem’s streets. Cornell Stokes (Mahershala Ali), a criminal kingpin with ties to our invincible superhero, appears hellbent on waging gang warfare across the city. Night Nurse, also known as Claire Temple (Rosario Dawson), is also featured as the “Agent Coulson”-like thread that connects all of New York’s heroes together.
A brief, yet powerful appearance by Misty Knight (Simone Missick) insists that Harlem might not be strong enough to handle the chaos presented by Cottonmouth (Stokes). It is a dose of reality rap that will make this show resonate with audiences who are fans of “tell-it-like-it-t-i-is” dialogue.

The first season of Luke Cage will be available for binge-watching and streaming on September 30th.
